Welcome to LLE

The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) of the University of Rochester is a unique national resource for research and education in science and technology. LLE was established in 1970 as a center for the investigation of the interaction of intense radiation with matter. The National Nuclear Security Administration funds LLE as part of its Stockpile Stewardship Program.

Samuel Morse and Nickolaos Savidis Elected Optical Society Senior Members

Omega Facility Division Director, Sam Morse, and Laser System Scientist, Nick Savidis, were chosen as Senior Members by the Board of Directors of The Optical Society (OSA). This distinction provides well-established individuals recognition for their experience and professional accomplishments within the field of optics and photonics. The OSA is the leading professional home to 22,000 accomplished scientists, engineers, students, and entrepreneurs.

Special Release

LLE Scientists Selected
for Landau–Spitzer Award

The American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics and the European Physics Society Plasma Physics Division have recognized LLE Chief Scientist Riccardo Betti and LLE Senior Scientist Wolfgang Theobald as well as Xavier Rebeyre and Alexis Casner from the Centre Lasers Intenses et Applications with the Landau–Spitzer Award. They have been awarded for “major advancements of the shock-ignition concept through collaborative experimental and simulation efforts in inertial confinement fusion research.” The Award is given to an individual or group of researchers for outstanding theoretical, experimental, or technical contribution(s) in plasma physics and for advancing the collaboration and unity between Europe and the United States of America by joint research or research that advances knowledge that benefits the two communities in a unique way.

Around the Lab

The Design and Implementation of the SR-Te Diagnostic

The goal for fusion experiments is to demonstrate that the outputs of thermonuclear reactions initiated from an assembled hydrogenic plasma are, by themselves, capable of triggering additional reactions. Current experiments at the Omega Laser Facility show that while the capsule hot spot just reaches conditions to begin this process, it would not continue as much as considered possible.
